Calm Doesn’t Have to Be Boring: Serene Renovation Ideas Beyond White 🤍

Colourful yet calming kitchen & bathroom design ideas from Little Star's lead designer.

When Pantone released their 2026 Colour of the Year — PANTONE 11-4201 “Cloud Dancer”, a soft, billowy white meant to evoke calm and clarity, I wasn’t surprised. After the last few years, it makes sense that many of us are craving simplicity and serenity at home.

But here’s the thing: calm doesn’t have to mean colourless.

At Little Star Renovations, we design and build kitchens, bathrooms, and whole-home renovations across Metro Vancouver and the Comox Valley, and one thing I always tell clients is this — you can create a peaceful, grounding space without stripping away personality. In fact, the most serene homes often have just enough warmth, colour, and texture to feel truly restorative.

Let’s look at a few ways to go beyond the blank canvas while keeping that calm, collected feeling, especially in kitchens and bathrooms, where it matters most.

Serenity with Personality (Yes, It’s Possible)

I completely understand why neutral homes are appealing, especially if you have a demanding job, a busy household, or simply want your home to feel like a break from overstimulation. But neutrality doesn’t have to mean no colour at all.

The sweet spot is balance. Soft hues, natural materials, and thoughtful textural contrast that reflect you — while still feeling calm, timeless, and livable.

Here are three design directions we have recently explored with clients renovating in the Lower Mainland, the North Shore, and Vancouver Island.

West Coast Calm

Living and working in North Vancouver, it’s impossible not to be inspired by the ocean, forests, and ever-changing skies. A palette rooted in blues and greens brings that natural calm indoors — and there’s real science behind it. Green tones are proven to help regulate the nervous system and reduce stress.

A West Coast–inspired kitchen or bathroom features:

  • Natural wood floating vanity or cabinetry
  • Light quartz countertops for brightness and durability
  • Aqua or sea-glass toned backsplash or shower wall tile
  • Brushed metal fixtures and hardware
  • Stone-look textured floor tile for an organic feel

The result? A space that feels fresh, coastal, and quietly contemporary.

Dreamy Mediterranean Escapes

If winter has you dreaming of warmer places (I feel this deeply), a soft Mediterranean influence can bring spa-like calm into your renovation — without feeling themed or overdone.

Think sun-washed neutrals, dramatic contrast and subtle warmth.

Touches that evoke a Mediterranean spa retreat:

  • Earthy or moody tones layered together
  • Natural textures like wood, plaster, and stone
  • Gently patterned, time-worn tiles for character
  • Contemporary brass or matte black fixtures for contrast
  • Curved, organic details paired with clean lines

This approach works beautifully in bathroom renovations, creating a relaxed atmosphere that invites you to slow down and soak it in.

Cosy Old-World Charm

For many of our clients, calm means escaping the noise — mentally, not just physically. An old-world farmhouse influence on kitchens can transport us to another time, and deliver warmth, comfort, and a sense of ease after a long day.

Key elements for that charming European feel:

  • Patinated finishes like terracotta tile and warm wood
  • Muted or heritage colours on shaker-style cabinetry
  • Open wood shelving and exposed brickwork
  • Brass or oil-rubbed bronze accents
  • Apron-front sinks for timeless charm

It’s rustic, yes — but also refined, timeless and livable – perfect for families.

Be Bold

White will always have its place in interior spaces. But if you’re planning a renovation this year I encourage you to think beyond “neutral only.” Too often, renovations are approached through the lens of potential future buyers, resulting in spaces that feel safe — but also a little soulless. Instead, let’s design a home that reflects who you are and how you want to live right now, without worrying about who might live there someday. After all, a renovation isn’t just an investment in your home’s future value — it’s an investment in your quality of life today.

Serenity in the home can come from:

  • colour and materials inspired by nature
  • textures that feel good to live with
  • spaces that reflect who you are

That’s where the magic happens ✨

If you’re ready to explore a renovation that feels both serene and personal, we’d love to help.
